Though not a factory race bike, the 2018 RM-Z250L8 is easily one of the most recognizable motocross bikes on the market. Sporting bold yellow and blue hues along the chassis, the 2018 Z250 commands sharp corners like no other dirt bike in its class, and, according to, was “carefully developed to deliver a high level of performance by incorporating a variety of features originally created for Suzuki factory race bikes.”

One such feature is the “competition-proven” Suzuki Holeshot Assist Control (S-HAC), which guarantees riders the holeshot in any number of track scenarios; it even has two selectable modes that correspond to track conditions and skill level. Additionally, the specialized KYB PSF2 Pneumatic Spring fork makes for more agile handling than ever. By connecting the rear shock absorber link-style to the swingarm, adjustments to speed and damping come much easier, and spring preload can be more precisely tuned.

While some contend the 2018 Z250 isn’t suited for competition due to its weight, poor front braking, and slow revving, its mellow engine translates into a smooth and easy ride—that is, as long as you aren’t traversing steep or whoops-y terrain. Otherwise, prepare to give the clutch a little more chutzpah to avoid the engine’s tiring out too quickly. 

Though braking and engine power are lacking in terms of the race bike capabilities of the RM-Z250L8, you have to remember this bike isn’t a factory race bike, and you’d better set your sights on something other than a used Suzuki RM-Z250L8 if winning is your #1 goal. Still, if a motocross competition could be won based on how well a bike drags in corners, the 2018 Suzuki RM-Z250L8 is a surefire victory.
